A group of Christian teenagers in England who had been wearing narrow silver purity rings to express a religious commitment to chastity have faced intense pressure from their school for breaking rules on proper school attire. In the United States wearing personal religious symbols such as crosses is permitted in most school. In general in the United States most students see it as there right to were small religious symbols such as silver rings and crosses as long as these symbols do not infringe on other students rights.

The ban has been described as both a violation of human rights, and also as an act of discrimination. Non Christian groups had been permitted to wear items such as head scarves and Kara bracelets.

Student who wear the small silver rings that are engraved with Biblical verse had been given detentions and treated as if a criminal offense has taken place.

The Millais School has used the pretense that the silver rings, were a prohibited fashion accessory. The school also claimed that there were health and safety issues.

It is reported that different factions beliefs range from religious tolerance to outright bands on display of religious symbols. It would be quite interesting if a band on something as harmless as a silver ring could cause people to reconsider the power structure in England. At least the girls involved have only been imprisoned, (when in school detention), and not burned as witches.
