Peridot is the Birth Stone for the month of August.
Peridot has a light green color which comes from a combination of iron, nickel and chromium. The stone is actually a combination of several minerals. Peridot comes from many sources that include Myanmar, Pakistan, Brazil, Germany, and Mexico. Much of the world's supply comes from Arizona.

Peridot is perhaps derived from the French word peritot. It could also be named from the Arabic word faridat which means gem. It has been confused with many other gem stones, even emerald. Many are even sold as emeralds. The cut stones tend to be small as most of the larger stones have many inclusions. It is worn by some people because it is supposed to bring the wearer success, peace, and good luck. In ancient times the Peridot was mined at night as moon light was said to enhance it's visibility.
