Carat weight can be a very misunderstood term. A carat is a unit of measure, just as a pound or ounce are standard units of measure. In the Gem trade less expensive stones are often referred to by the actual size of the face of the stone. You will see many of the stones in the sterling silver rings we offer described by their size, a common example is a 7 mm x 5 mm oval stone. Inexpensive colored stones may be cut a little thicker, or thinner to provide a good visual color. On the other hand a well cut diamond's value is very dependent on the actual weight. Diamonds as well as true gemstones are measures in carats and points. A point is 1/100 of a carat. Therefore a two and a half carat stone would be sold as 2.5 carats. Many rings are sold, and the total carat weight is given. However two half carat stones are worth much less than a single one carat stone. When you see a ring advertised as one carat total weight, but there are fifty two point stones, for a total weight of one hundred points, or one carat, that ring is worth much less than a ring with four quarter carat stones.

In the case of Cubic Zirconia, or CZ rings there is another factor to consider. Cubic Zirconia is almost twice as dense as a diamond.
