Amethyst

Amethyst is the Birth stone for February.
The Color ranges from deep purple to pale violet. It is not considered a Gem Stone for legal purposes. Although the stone is very attractive these is a good supply which results in reasonable prices. Therefore since it is not rare, or expensive Amethyst is not classified as a Gem stone. Commonly it is called a semi precious gemstone.

Amethyst has a hardness rating of 7 on a scale of 1 to 10. A diamond is the only stone with a hardness rating of 10. For practical purposes a 7 is a "good" level of hardness for rings and jewelry. Most natural colored stones have a hardness rating of about 7 to 8.

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. The name comes from the Greek language and means "not drunken." This was maybe due to the ancient belief that it would ward off the effects of alcohol. Some believe that the Greeks were referring to the almost wine like color. Natural Amethyst has a denser color than CZ which is colored purple.
